Summary

Edinburgh’s subterranean street running beneath the George IV Bridge arches — dark, medieval, and functionally unlike anywhere else in Scotland for period shoots.

About this location

The Cowgate runs east-west through the lower town of Edinburgh, largely underneath the high-level bridges that carry the Bridges and George IV Bridge overhead. The resulting street environment is genuinely unique: the roadway runs in a semi-enclosed canyon created by the viaduct structures above, their massive masonry piers lining both sides of the road and creating a series of alcoves where s, clubs, and small businesses occupy arch-spaces. Natural light is limited and directional; the character is dark, compressed, and unmistakably medieval in scale even where the exact buildings are 19th-century.

The area’s filming value lies in this atmospheric quality. The Cowgate reads on camera as a Gothic or Victorian urban environment without any art direction. The arch structures of the South Bridge to the east include a series of closed vaults below ground level (the Edinburgh Vaults, a separate attraction) which have their own film-hire programme. The street-level Cowgate itself is managed as public highway by Edinburgh City Council.

Film Edinburgh handles location enquiries and can facilitate introductions to and venue owners in the arches. The Grassmarket — a broad open square with a market character — connects to the Cowgate via Victoria Street, giving productions a range of adjacent options. Victoria Street’s curved exterior with layered frontages is one of the most-used Edinburgh street exteriors. The Cowgate is particularly useful for night shoots given the existing low ambient light levels.
