About this location
Chatsworth House is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Devonshire, occupying an elevated position above the River Derwent in the Derbyshire Peak District. The current oque structure dates largely from the 1690s, designed by William Talman for the 1st Duke, with major additions by the 6th Duke in the early 19th century including a sculpture gallery, theatre, and north wing. The gardens — covering 105 acres — were shaped by Joseph Paxton, who later designed the Crystal Palace.
On screen, the house is best known as the stand-in for Pemberley in Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice (2005), with Keira Knightley walking the south front terrace. It has also appeared in Barry Lyndon (1975), The Bounty (1984), The Duchess (2008), Death Comes to Pemberley (2013), Peaky Blinders, and The Crown (2016). The interiors include a series of elaborately painted and gilded state rooms from the late 17th century — Baroque ceilings, tapestry-hung walls, and a grand painted hall — offering a range of period settings from a single location.
The Chatsworth estate spans 1,822 acres and can accommodate large film units. The house itself is open to the public during the main visitor season, so production scheduling must avoid peak access periods. A dedicated filming liaison service operates through the estate office.
