Summary

A Georgian crescent spa hotel in the Peak District — the 1789 Crescent (recently restored to a hotel and spa), the Devonshire Dome, and the opera house, giving a complete late-Georgian resort environment at 300 metres elevation.

About this location

Buxton is a spa town in the Peak District at 300 metres elevation — the highest market town in England. The Crescent was built in 1789 by John Carr of York for the fifth Duke of Devonshire, modelling the architecture of the Royal Crescent in Bath. The building has recently (2020) been restored and converted to the Buxton Crescent Hotel and Thermal Spa, with the original facade maintained.

Adjacent to the Crescent, the Devonshire Dome (originally the Devonshire Royal Hospital, now the University of Derby Buxton campus) has the largest unsupported dome in Britain (completed 1881). The Buxton Opera House (1903) is a Frank Matcham theatre in excellent condition, giving a complete Edwardian variety theatre interior.

For productions, Buxton gives a complete Georgian spa town environment — the Crescent facade, the Dome, the Opera House — in a Peak District setting. The Crescent Hotel manages film hire for the building. The Opera House is separately available through the theatre management.
