Summary

A 14th-century moated National Trust castle in East Sussex, often described as representing the popular ideal of a medieval castle, used in Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Doctor Who: The King’s Demons (1983) and Robot of Sherwood (2014).

About this location

Bodiam Castle stands in the Rother Valley in East Sussex, near Robertsbridge. It was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, ostensibly to defend England’s south coast from French raids, though its location well inland and its largely ornamental defensive features have led later historians to regard it as more a statement of prestige than a fortification. The castle is a near-perfect example of a rectangular courtyard castle, with round corner towers, twin-towered gatehouse, and a wide moat that reflects the towers and battlements in a composition that has been much photographed. The moat was supplied by springs and has proved difficult to drain for archaeological excavations; the approach to the gatehouse was originally indirect and multi-staged, designed to give visitors time to view the castle from the water.

The interior is largely ruinous but the outer walls and towers stand substantially intact. The National Trust has maintained the castle since 1925; new roofs were added to the towers and gatehouse to stabilise them. A 1990 survey by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England documented the extensive earthworks surrounding the site.

The film record centres on the castle’s medieval appearance. Bodiam appears in an establishing shot of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) identifying it as “Swamp Castle” in the Sir Lancelot sequence — the main interior filming for that production was done at Doune Castle in Scotland. It also appeared in The Goodies episode “Camelot” (1973). Doctor Who used the castle for the serial The King’s Demons (1983) and again in the revived series for the episode Robot of Sherwood (2014, Series 8, with Tom Riley as Robin Hood).
