About this location
Blists Hill Victorian Town is an open-air museum in the Ironbridge Gorge, operated by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust. It occupies a 42-acre site on a former industrial plateau above the River Severn at Madeley, within the wider Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. The museum reconstructs a working Victorian town circa 1900, with a high street of authentic period buildings — a bank, pub, bakery, ironmongers, chemist, printer, and candlemaker — staffed by costumed interpreters. Many buildings were relocated from elsewhere in the region and rebuilt on the site.
The industrial infrastructure includes a working blast furnace (the Blists Hill Iron Company blast furnace, in situ from the 19th century), a clay tobacco pipe works, a foundry, and a canal inclined plane that once connected the site to the Shropshire Canal below. This combination of genuine Victorian industrial remains and a dressed period streetscape makes the site unusually versatile for period productions requiring factory, shop, or street scenes without the logistical overhead of filming in a live town.
Film and television credits include the 1985 Doctor Who serial “The Mark of the Rani”, in which the village streets were used as a Yorkshire mining town. The 1995 film Feast of July was shot partly at Blists Hill. The BBC’s Victorian Pharmacy (2010) used the museum’s period pharmacy as a principal location, taking advantage of the working chemical dispensary. The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust handles filming enquiries.
