Summary
One of Blackpool’s three Victorian seaside piers — a 341-metre iron-and-timber pier over the Irish Sea with a big wheel, fairground rides, and the working-class English seaside environment at its most concentrated.
About this location
Blackpool Central Pier opened in 1868 and extends 341 metres into the Irish Sea from the centre of Blackpool’s seafront. The pier structure is cast-iron with a timber deck and carries a permanent funfair — rides, food stalls, amusements — at the shore and pier head ends, with a big wheel (installed 1990) visible from the beach. The pier operates year-round as a commercial attraction.
The wider Blackpool Promenade — the Tower (1894), the three piers, the Winter Gardens, the Illuminations infrastructure (tram standard-mounted lights running 6 miles of the promenade) — gives a seaside resort environment that is specifically and unapologetically working class, and which has appeared as such in British film and television from Coronation Street exterior sequences to Funny Bones (1995) to contemporary drama.
For productions, the piers and promenade give a seaside resort environment at a scale and intensity of colour and activity that has no equivalent in England. The Central Pier is privately managed; direct hire through the pier operator. The promenade and beach require Blackpool Borough Council permits.
