Summary

A reconstructed 1900s canal-side village used extensively by Peaky Blinders — trams, back-to-back houses, and a working chain shop make it the most production-ready period environment in the Midlands.

About this location

The Black Country Living Museum is a 26-acre open-air museum in Dudley, developed from the 1970s on a former industrial site alongside the Dudley Canal. The museum reconstructed a complete early-20th-century Black Country working community: rows of back-to-back workers’ cottages, a working chain shop demonstrating chain-making, a rolling mill, a coalmine, a Victorian shopping street with period fittings, canal-side wharves, and a working tramway running through the site. Costumed interpreters staff the buildings during public opening hours.

The museum has become one of the most significant production locations in the Midlands precisely because it does the art direction work for you — the period street, the canal wharf, and the industrial buildings are all genuinely dressed and maintained to period standard. Peaky Blinders used the museum extensively from Series 2 onwards for its Birmingham back-street sequences, and the museum’s profile in production circles has grown substantially as a result. Other drama productions using it include various BBC period films and documentaries.

The museum’s commercial team manages film hire separately from the visitor experience. Dawn-to-opening-time and after-closing-time slots give exclusive access to an empty period environment. The canal beside the site is operational and accessible. Full power and loading facilities support production infrastructure. Dudley is in the West Midlands metro area — Birmingham city centre is 20 minutes by road.
